This is our third trip to Thailand since Covid. We spent three months here and covered thousands of kilometres from south to north (see the Thailand 2021 travel notes), back when there were still so few tourists. We got to experience the kindness of the locals on that trip — notably in Pattalung, where after torrential rain our car’s battery died. I still remember the hotel owner calling the garage, normally closed (it was a Sunday), and the mechanic bringing us a new battery on his scooter, right in the middle of the flooded street — refusing to be paid for the trip, just the price of the battery. The road, the temples, the landscapes, all to ourselves.

We then went back to Chiang Mai for a month, before continuing our journey to Luang Prabang, Vientiane, Siem Reap and Angkor Wat, then Abu Dhabi and Jerusalem. For the past month, we’ve opened a new Thai chapter in Hua Hin, and in a few months we’ll hit the road again for the beautiful landscapes of Isan.
